In the preparation of a glass fibre-elastomeric product, e.g. a belt or tire, in which the elastomeric material constitutes a continuous phase with the glass fibres arranged therein in bundles formed of a multiplicity of glass fibres, the individual glass fibres prior to bundle formation are coated with an elastomeric based composition in an amount of less than 10% by weight on the dry solids basis, the multiplicity of coated glass fibres are gathered into bundles, and the bundles are processed to the form desired and then impregnated prior to their combination with the continuous phase elastomer, with an elastomeric based impregnating composition to load the glass fibre bundles with a total of more than 12% by weight dry solids of the elastomeric based materials. After coating with elastomeric based composition the glass fibre bundles may be processed into strands, yarns, cords or fabrics. The elastomeric material of the continuous phase may be natural rubber, neoprene, isoprene, butyl rubber, a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer or a butadiene-styrene copolymer. Compositions used to coat and impregnate the glass fibres may comprise an aqueous composition containing natural rubber and a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin which may contain gamma-amino propyl triethoxysilane and a quaternary ammonium hydroxide or an aqueous composition containing a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, formaldehyde, ammonium hydroxide, a vinyl pyridine-butadiene-styrene terpolymer, a neoprene latex, a butadiene latex and sodium hydroxide which may contain gamma amino propyltriethoxysilane or carbon black.
