Abstract

1,178,536. Jointing by rolling; soldering. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 17 July, 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36008/66. Headings B3M and B3R. Two layers 15 and 16 of different metals are roll bonded together by passing an assembly 19 of two sets of such layers between the rolls 1 and 2 of a pendulum mill, the sets being separated by a layer 18 of stop-weld material to prevent bonding between the sets. The assembly is subjected to simultaneous reduction and heating by the oscillating action of the rolls. In an example, after optional cleaning of the surfaces of titanium layers 16 and aluminium layers 15, the layers are assembled together with an intermediate layer 18 of a carbon-containing material or graphite suspended in oil. Seals 17 of a thermoplastic compound are positioned at the joins of the layers. The assembly is passed at 2 ft./min. between the rolls which oscillate at 340 ft./min. to bond the layers together, the seals 17 softening or becoming disengaged during the rolling. A layer of tin or a layer of brass or brazing alloy may replace the layer of stop-weld material, the sets of layers thereby being soldered or brazed together when rolled. The solder or brazing alloy, whose melting temperature is not higher than the annealing temperature of the metals to be joined, is removed after the rolling process.
