[Also in Division E2] A telescopically extensible strut, intended for use as a stay, for adjusting the angle of inclination of the back-rest of a vehicle seat, has a resilient brake ring 34 (24 Fig. 2, not shown) gripping the rod 4, to damp its longitudinal motion, under the action of return spring 27. The braking action prevents the back-rest, on release of a locking mechanism 15, 30, from being jerked suddenly against the occupant's back. In another form, using a modified locking mechanism of the same ball and recess type, the strength of the braking action depends on the force exerted, by return spring 27, on ring (24), which may be of nylon or rubber.
