Abstract

117,803. Williams, L. N. D. Jan. 20, 1916, [Convention date]. Knitted-fabric sewing-machines-A machine for sewing together the two halves of a knitted web, as in closing the toe portion of a " seamless " stocking, comprises a ring 3, Fig. 2, having two semicircular rows of points 4, 4a, one preferably higher than the other as shown, to which the stitches m, m<1> are transferred from the knitting-machine. The ring is mounted on a rotatable cylinder 2. Supported on the base 1 is a semicircular member 5 fixed thereto and a semicircular member 5a hinged to the member 5 at 7. The member 5 carries two semicircular sliding members 9, 13 provided with transfer points 10 and strippers 14a respectively. In operation, the member 9 is pushed upwards by a rod 11 and the points 10 take the stitches m<1> from the points 4. The member 5a is then swung about the hinge 7 to bring the points 10 above the points 4 and the strippers 14a are actuated to strip the stitches m<1> on to the points 4 along with the stitches m. The parts are then restored to their normal positions and the stitches m, m' are united by sewing-needles x, x<1> the feed being obtained by giving the cylinder a step-by-step rotation. In another construction, the ring 3 may be hinged and the points 4 caused to register with the transfer points 10, as shown in Fig. 5. The strippers are carried by the member 5a and the transfer points by the member 5. To hold up the points 10 during stitching, pivoted catches 21 are carried by an angled member 20 and caused to project under the member 9 by partial rotation of the member 20, In a further modification, Fig. 10, the transfer points are dispensed with, and the point ring, supporting cylinder, and the ring 5 are each made in halves 3, 3, 2, 2, 5, 5 respectively and the entire structure composed of the corresponding halves is swung on its pivot 7 over the other part. Fig. 12 shows another arrangement in which the point ring 3 is carried by a ring support 2 which is completely inverted to carry the points 4 over the points 10. The stripper 14 is mounted on the ring 3 as shown, and the transfer point carrier 9 is slidably mounted on a semicylindrical support 2. When the point carrier is in halves, they may be arranged so as to place the double stitches alternately on either half so that a chain of sewing stitches can be made on each side of the join. The stitch-engaging members may be disposed in straight lines for doubling and uniting the stitches of flat webs.
