Abstract
1,177,541. Making bags. W. S. SCHNEIDER and A. P. CORELLA. 24 Jan., 1967 [26 Jan., 1966], No. 3552/67. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for forming filled packages includes means to tube a web and seal and sever it transversely behind the open leading end to form a closed-ended sleeve (Fig. 2a), means fitting the sleeve on a former and for shaping the sleeve bottom on the former to produce a cylindrical circular bottomed container (Fig. 2b-2e). The container is ejected from the former (Fig. 2f) and carried past filling, sealing, trimming and notching stations (Fig. 2g-2j, respectively). Container forming.-The described apparatus is of duplex form with heat sealable webs W from reels 11 fed to two parallel tubing mandrels 31 (only one shown). The webs pass photo-electric means 28 which, for purposes of registration, vary the forward feed of the tubed web by modifying the longitudinal reciprocation of the mandrel 31 against which it is held by grippers 54. Each mandrel includes a relatively movable portion 31a which is advanced ahead of the body to engage one of a series of formers 50 on a turret 75 without leaving the leading end of the tube. As the mandrel body advances, the tube is threaded on the former, opposed sealer bars 42 (see also Fig. 7, not shown) forming a longitudinal seam which is folded down on to the tube. Transverse sealers 62 and a knife 73 operate after withdrawal of the mandrel body and head to form on the former 50, the container of Fig. 2a. End forming and ejecting.-The container is held by grippers 84 and passed beneath a bar 93 which folds down the end seam and produces tabs 71a (Fig. 2b). A slotted folder 92 co-operates with the bar to turn over the tabs and the base so formed is pressed against the former within by a heated plate 95 and the resultant seal cooled by a plate 100. Each former 50 includes a head portion 50b, Fig. 4, which moves outwards radially and remains so extended during bottom forming but is retracted prior to receiving a new container tube. The formers have a radial passage through which air is blown to assist in ejecting the container on to a conveyer 20 for filling and closing. A bottom reinforcing disc may be positioned in the container. A web 146, Fig. 4, is fed to cutter means 147 which severs discs and places them on the end of each former. Suction through the former air passage holds the disc in place until the container is placed on and the bottom is about to be formed. Filling and closing.-The apparatus for completing the package is not detailed. Each container is held in a fitting 108 on the conveyer 20 by suction through an aperture 109. To facilitate pouring, the closure seal, made by jaws 111, is inclined and the excess 112 is cut off. A notch 115 is then made for ease of opening.
