Abstract

1,177,358. Toy carousel or roundabout. MARLIN TOY PRODUCTS Inc. 3 March, 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 10315/67. Heading A6S. A roundabout toy wherein a carrier rotates about a vertical main axis and supports at least one mobile member for travel therewith, the or each mobile member being rotatable about its own individual axis approximately parallel to the main axis and disposed radially of this, and having a spindle concentric with the individual axis, there being provided a stationary drive means beneath the carrier and extending in circular array around the main axis said drive means comprising a surface inclined at an angle to the main axis, an individual axis drive element being attached to the or each spindle to interact with the stationary drive means so as to rotate the mobile member in response to rotation of the carrier. Preferably as shown in Fig. 3 the carrier is driven by the spring motor and bull gear of a musical box 18, which is wound up by winding spindle 22 connected to elongated shank 44 and its associated knob. The hub 40 of the carrier fits in a seating 23 in the motor casing 21 and is formed with teeth 43 at its lower edge. These teeth mesh with the bull gear of the musical box and drive the carrier. As is seen most clearly in Fig. 6 (not shown) the carrier comprises a wheel like array of mobile member supports 32 connected to each other and the hub 40 by channel members 31. Supports 32 carry a bearing 38 which rotatable supports the spindle 64 of the mobile member. Bearing 38 is flexibly supported by 32 so that its end may move outwards in accordance with the point of contact of the individual axis driving member 67 on the stationary driving surfaces 70A, 70B. As is seen these driving surfaces are preferably raised surfaces and the spindles 64 are slidable axially so the driving members 67 adopt the most suitable contact position on the driving surface. The array of surfaces 70A, 7B may be broken so that the rotation of any mobile member is intermittent in any one revolution, and they may be spaced relative to the spindles 64 so that they contact the member 67 first at one side then the other, making the spindle rotate in opposite directions in any one revolution.
