Abstract

1,177,220. Coaxial cable connector. BELLING & LEE Ltd. 3 May, 1968 [3 May, 1967], No. 20571/67. Heading H2E. A smooth guiding surface formed on a cylindrical insert inside the body of a coaxial cable connector, in which the direction of engagement with a mating connector is inclined to the axis of cable entry, facilitates connection of the inner cable conductor with the inner contact of the connector. As shown, one limb 2 of an L-shaped hollow metal body 1 carries parts of a coaxial plug comprising an inner contact 7, an outer contact 8 which is part of an extension member 4, insulating inserts 5, 6 which retain contact 7, and a captive ring member 11 which may be provided with a screw-threaded portion 13 to engage a mating connector. The cable enters limb 3 of the body member 1 through a close fitting tube 14. A cylindrical ferrule 18 is located inside the outer conductor of the cable. When tube 14 is screwed into the limb 3 the outer conductor is retained in contact with the ferrule by inward radial thrust from a rubber sleeve 16 held between washers 15, 17. The inner conductor of the cable, to be soldered or crimped to the inner contact at 20, is guided into an-aperture 19 by a smooth arcuate channel 22 cut into a cylindrical metal insert 21. In another embodiment, the arcuate channel 22 is replaced by an axially curved cylindrical channel formed in diametral halves of the insert. The direction of connector engagement and the axis of cable entry may be inclined at an angle other than 90 degrees.
