Abstract

1,177,015. Ropes. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 21 April, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 18570/67. Heading D1T. A torque balanced Regular Lay rope comprising between three and six wire strands 2 stranded together, has the angle of lay of the outer wires 8 in each strand 2 at least 1¥ times, and preferably twice, the angle of lay of the strands in the rope, the torque exerted by the wires 6 and 8 of each strand being counteracted by the torque exerted by the strands. In Fig. 1 the wires 6 and 8 tend to rotate in the direction of the small arrows and the strands 2 tend to rotate in the direction of the large arrows. The torque balance is preferably such that the rope will rotate within 3‹ per foot of length up to 75% of its breaking strength. The rope may be stress relieved at a temperature between 600 and 1150‹F.
