1,176,844. Polymers containing hydantoin rings. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 3 March, 1967 [18 June, 1966], No. 10146/67. Heading C3R. The invention comprises polymers containing hydantoin or thiohydantoin units of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is an aliphatic or araliphatic radical with a valency of n, where n is 2, 3 or 4, and containing at least 3 carbon and/or heteroatoms between any two links to -N# radicals, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals which may be substituted, X is an oxygen or sulphur atom, R<SP>5</SP> is the residue of an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate after removal of not less than two -NCX groups and in the case where the polyiso(thio)cyanate contains more than two -NCX groups the other valencies of R<SP>5</SP> are satisfied by cross-linking, as are the other valencies when n is greater than two. The polymers are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate having 2 or more -NCO or -NCS groups attached to radical R<SP>5</SP>, with a glycine derivative of formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and n are as above and R<SP>4</SP> is a hydroxyl, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkoxy or aryloxy group. Polymers having active hydrogen atoms may be mixed with the finished polymers of the invention or included in the reaction mixture. Examples are given.
