Abstract

1,176,825. Photographic supports. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 6 April, 1967 [8 April, 1966], No. 15860/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions Dl and G2] A photographic support comprises a paper base carrying a layer of a polyolefin on each side, at least one layer containing a white pigment together with an optical brightening agent and/or a blue pigment. The pigmented polyolefin layer may contain a blue pigment and a magenta pigment or a blue pigment and an optical brightening agent. The optical brightening agent may be a bis benzoxazole-2-yl thiophene compound. The pigmented layer may contain up to one per cent by weight of the blue pigment and may contain between 0.02 and 0.5 per cent by weight of the optical brightening agent. Preferred paper bases have a high alpha-cellulose content and a wet strength resin e.g. melamine- or urea-formaldehyde, or cationic thermosetting polyamideepichlorohydrin resin, incorporated therein. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene or propylene-ethylene copolymer. The polyolefin-white pigment e.g. titanium dioxide, may be extruded as a melt on to the paper and then subjected to pressure by means of a chill roll. The paper may be electron bombarded or primer coated prior to the application of the polyolefin layer. The polyolefin layer may be electron bombarded prior to the application of the photographic emulsion.
