Abstract
1,176,747. Photo-electric defect detection. BALL BROS CO. Inc. April 9, 1968, No.16893/68. Heading G1A. Defects in objects are detected photo-electrically, an object being passed through a number of photoelectric defect detection stations in succession and the presence of a defect in the object detected at an earlier station or earlier stations being stored electronically, so that when the object has passed through the apparatus to a 'pass' or 'reject' station, if a defect has been detected at any of the detection stations, the object may be rejected. Photoelectric means is also provided for sensing the position and movement of an object from one station to the next and also to control shifting of fault information from one storage circuit to the next. The arrangement described has three detection stations operating by reflection from or transmission through an object of light from a source (not shown). A photo-cell (12) senses transfer of an object from one station to the next and thereby sets off a sequence of time displaced signals. An inspection pulse is produced from a bi-stable multi-vibrator (56) and subsequently scan and delayed scan signals from mono-stables (83) and (84). The presence or absence of a fault as detected by a first photo-cell (13) is held in a first bi-stable circuit (98) and then transferred to a first memory bi-stable (115). The same occurs for the second detection station except that the information held in its (the second) memory bi-stable (134) is modified by that held in first bi-stable (115) i.e. if a fault was recorded at the first detection location (in first memory bi-stable) this is transferred to the second memory bi-stable. The output of the third photo-cell (15) is used to modify the information stored in memory bi-stable (134) if this is not already recording a fault. A final signal from the position photo-cell causes the second memory bi-stable to be read out and control a pass or reject circuit, including a mono-stable delay circuit and relay. Circuits diagrams are given for amplifiers (for photo-cell outputs) Fig. 3; mono-stables, Fig.4; an inverter, Fig. 5; AND-gate, Fig.6; bi-stables, Fig. 7; an inhibit circuit, Fig. 8; relay control circuits, Fig.9 (none shown).
