Abstract

1,176,425. Electrostatic precipitators. ATOMENERGI A.B. 16 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7425/67. Heading B2J. [Also in Division G1] Precipitation apparatus, e.g. for sensing possible leakage of radioactive isotopes from a nuclear reactor, comprises a chamber with delivery and discharge ports 2, 3 for the gas, a precipitation electrode 8 in the chamber, and a discharge port 12 for a liquid containing precipitated particles flowing from the precipitation electrode. The precipitation electrode comprises at least two parallel vertical or inclined wires, the upper ends of the wires being situated adjacent to a liquid delivery port. The lower end of the electrode is spring mounted at 10. The liquid flows as a film along and between the wires. In operation, radio-active particles which on their decay emit an electron acquire a positive charge and are attracted by the negatively-charged electrode. Water and the particles flow out via the conduit 12 into a measuring chamber 14, and Cerenkov radiation is registered by a photo multiplier 17. Alternatively a scintillometer may be used to measure radio-activity in the collected liquid.
