Abstract

1,176,096. Producing metals. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPLJ N.V. Aug.30, 1968, No.41521/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division C1] A metal composited with a refractory carrier is produced from a metal sulphate composited with said carrier by reduction with a gas comprising one or more hydrocarbons and an inert diluent. In the described process, a composition of refractory and metal and/or metal compound capable of taking up SO 2 (e.g. an oxide), which has been used to remove S0 2 from a gas, by passing the gas containing oxides of sulphur and oxygen over the composition, is regenerated by reduction of the metal sulphate formed with the hydrocarbon/inert gas mixture. The metal may be copper. Another possible composition is the refractory, a vanadium compound and an alkali metal compound. The refractory may be bauxite, silica, silica/alumina, clays, silica/magnesia or y-Alumina. Preferably the composition contains 5-15 wt% of metal. The inert gas (e.g. steam, N 2 , C0 2 ) to hydrocarbon volume ratio is preferably 10:1-0À5:1, the reduction preferably being at 200-500<SP>oc</SP>. The hydrocarbon preferably has at least 3 carbon atoms per molecule and boils at 40-20<SP>oc</SP> (1 atmos). The hydrocarbons may be recovered from the product SO 2 - containing gas by condensing them by cooling, with or without compression of the gas.
