An operating mechanism for a folding cupboard door consists of an angled lever, having one arm (parts 9 and 11) longer than the other (parts 6 and 7), pivoted on the cupboard 15 about a point 1 in the shorter arm, and a gas-pressure energy storage device 3, one end of which is fixed to the shorter arm of the lever at 5, and the other end to the cupboard at 2. The "dead-centre" position (line 14) of the energy storage device, at which the pressure within is at a maximum, is such that the energy storage device, and hence the lever, in moving from the dead-centre position (door slightly open) to that in which the door is folded upwards and open (Fig. 1, not shown) passes through an angle α (not shown) greater than the angle # passed through when moving from the dead centre position to that in which the door is extended and closed.
