Abstract

[Also in Division H4] An electronic imaging system comprises a first image intensifier stage of the type employing a first photo-cathode and a first luminescent screen separated by a vacuum space which does not contain any secondary emissive structure, an optical coupling element coupling the first stage to a second image intensifier stage which includes a second photo-cathode, a channel intensifier device and a second luminescent screen on the output side of the channel intensifier. By image intensifiers there is also included image converters in which a change of wavelength is produced. As shown, the first image intensifier stage has a rotationally symmetric electron-optical focusing system of the image inverting type located between photocathode P1 and screen S1, and a fibre optic plate F0, curved to conform to screen Sl, is used to couple the two stages. The second stage is of the " proximity type " in which the photo-cathode P2 is placed very near the channel intensifier I without intermediate electronoptical focusing, and screen S2 is adjacent the channel output electrode E2. The two stages may be within a single envelope, or in separate envelopes in which case the fibre optic plate is split at d. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the elements P1 and S1 in the first stage are planar and placed very close together without an intermediate focusing system, i.e. " proximity type," to produce a very compact imaging system. If image inversion is required, this may be facilitated by a twisted bundle of optical fibres succeeding screen S2. In a third embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the first stage again is of the " proximity type " and the second stage incorporates an electron-optical focusing system between photo-cathode P2 and the channel input electrode E1. The channel intensifier may, for example, be constructed as described in any of Specifications 1,064,073, 1,064,074, 1,064,075 and 1,090,406.
