Abstract

117,470. Herreshoff, J. B. April 14, 1917. Matte and collecting processes for copper and other metals.- Values are recovered from metallurgical slags by passing the slags through a series of baths of molten material containing a smaller percentage of the metal to be extracted than was originally present in the material from which the slag was separated. In the apparatus shown, copper slags from a smelting furnace 1 are passed into a series of tanks 2 - - 5 containing mattes of successively lower grades. The slag and matte from the tank 5 pass to a rotary mixer 7 by way of a trough 6 to which a lower grade of matte from a furnace 9 may be supplied. The slag and matte are afterwards separated in a tank 8. The low grade mattes are gradually enriched in copper and other metals and are transferred from time to time to the preceding tank of the series. The process may be similarly applied to the treatment of slags obtained in the extraction of other metal such as gold, silver, tin, lead, nickel, and cobalt.
