Abstract

1,174,591. Mixed-flow pumps and fans. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. April 24, 1967 [Jan. 24, 1966], No.3198/66. Heading F1C. In a mixed-flow pump or fan, the angular inclination relative to the rotor axis 3 of the axis 19A of the length of each rotor blade 19 in a plane containing those two axes can be varied so as to vary the relative proportions of the radial-flow action and axial-flow action. The angle can be varied from 90 degrees down to 45 degrees as shown or even down to 0 degrees. The pivot points of the blades may lie on a circle concentric with the motor 5, the surrounding part of the casing 1 having as axial cross-section the centre of curvature of each point of which lies on the circle. The blades may be adjusted by a reversible hydraulic motor mounted in the rotor 5 and driven by liquid supplied through passages 33 provided in the shaft 7. The liquid may be the same as that handled by the pump so that leakage will not affect the purity of the pumped liquid. The blades may instead be adjusted by a mechanical linkage inside the pump casing and actuated by a screw or shaft from outside the casing. Or, electrically driven jacks may be used. The blades may also be of variable pitch or twist.
