Abstract

1,174,407. 1- and 2-Olefins. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 23 Nov., 1967 [5 Dec., 1966], No. 54274/66. Heading C5E. Mixtures of 1- and 2-olefins containing greater than the thermodynamic equilibrium proportion of 1-olefins are obtained by contacting a 2- alkanethiol at elevated temperature (e.g. between 150‹ and 500‹ C.) with a catalyst containing an oxide or oxyanion of chromium, molybdenum or vanadium, the weight of metal being at least 0À1% of the total catalyst weight. The catalyst may be supported, e.g. on alumina, silica, silica/alumina or a mineral silicate, particularly sepiolite. An inert diluent may be present, e.g. a hydrocarbon, nitrogen, helium or CO 2 . The 2-alkanethiol may be obtained by reacting a 2-olefin with H 2 S.
