Abstract

1,174,243. Valves, fluid-pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 6 Dec., 1966 [21 Dec., 1965; 29 April, 1966; 27 May, 1966; 8 July, 1966], Nos. 54066/65, 18817/66, 23776/66 and 30718/66. Headings F2F and F2V. A pressure control valve has an exhaust port 7 providing a seat for a throttling valve member 13 so as to set up a control pressure at an outlet 10 which is in permanent communication with a supply conduit 26 through a restricted choke 25. The valve member is engaged by a cantilever leaf spring 14 which is variably loaded at its free end to determine the control pressure. As shown, the loading is applied electromagnetically through a coil 18 carried by the spring and co-operating with a magnet 20. The loading will normally be arranged to increase with energization of the coil but may be arranged to increase with re-energization. The loading may alternatively be through a hand or foot lever compressing a spring which engages the leaf spring. Fluid is supplied through an inlet 40 and a regulating valve 29 operated by a diaphragm 32 to maintain a constant pressure in the conduit 26. To prevent loss of fluid through the exhaust port 7 under idling conditions, an additional valve supplying the inlet 40 may be arranged to open when the valve member 13 moves toward the port 7. In a modification, the adjustable sleeve 4 which carries the exhaust seat 7 is enlarged and houses a pressure-responsive exhaust cut-off valve (52, 53), Fig. 2 (not shown), which closes on loss of pressure in the conduit 26. In another modification, intended for a tractor-trailer braking system, an emergency loading means (A), Fig. 3 (not shown), is provided for the leaf spring 14. This consists of a solenoidoperated plunger (C) which moves to engage the leaf spring when the solenoid is de-energized in the event of a breakaway of the trailer.
