Abstract

1,174,170. Elastic-fluid turbine cooling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 26, 1967 [June 30, 1966], No.24571/67. Headings F1G and F1T. A cooling arrangement in a double flow steam or gas turbine comprises holes 13 in the first stage rotor wheel 2 and scoops 12 to pump working fluid from the downstream side of the wheel 2 through the holes into the annular space 11. A stationary recirculation conduit 14 connects the space 11 with the working fluid path downstream of the wheel 2. The blades 3 are shaped to have negative reaction adjacent their roots and thus the working fluid in the root region is at a slightly higher pressure on the downstream side of the wheel 2 than on the upstream side. The pressure in space 11 is therefore normally higher than in region 15 causing fluid to flow past the labyrinth seal 9 from the space to cool the seal and wheel face. Flow through the conduit 14 helps to maintain pressure in the space 11, the direction of flow depending upon the condition of the seals 9. The seal teeth 19 are inclined to permit greater flow in the direction of inclination than in the opposite direction.
