Abstract

1,174,002. Mechanical toys. W. P. CARROL. 19 Jan., 1967, No. 2975/67. Heading A6S. [Also in Division G1] The speed and/or steering of a toy vehicle is controlled remotely by varying the intensity of light falling on a photoelectric device on the vehicle. A toy racing car is provided with photocells SME, DME Fig. 8 which control the currents through a steering motor SM and a drive motor DM in accordance with the amount of light they receive from corresponding lamps (SML, DMY), Fig. 7, (not shown). To avoid light from each lamp affecting the wrong photocell, SML is a fluorescent tube and SME a selenium cell respectively producing and sensitive to wavelengths in the range 700-700 nm while DML is a tungsten lamp and DME a silicon cell each provided with a filter to work on wavelengths >725 nm. Current for the motors DM and SM is derived from the track which comprises alternate positive and negative strips 42, 44 (to which 12 volts is applied) by brushes Figs. 5 and 5g (not shown) which are laid out in the form of an L. To switch the car from forward to reverse and vice versa, switch 84 is closed. This applies 50 volts to the track, which is sufficient to step on the ratchet relay RR to reverse the direction of motor DM. Steering. The shaft of the motor SM carries an offset pin 38, Fig. 2, which cooperates with a crown wheel 36 fixed on a steering shaft 34. The steering crank 24 is biassed against a stop 26 by a rubber band 28, but provided the speed of motor SM is sufficient it is urged away from the stop by a cord 32.
