Abstract
1,173,784. Catheters. R. E.. BIDWELL AND S. MISHKIN. 13 March, 1967 [15 March, 1966], No. 11647/67. Heading ASR. A catheter for introducing liquid into the lungs e.g. for bronchography purposes, comprises a main longitudinal conduit 20 having a distal end opening 18 and two inflatable collars 12, 14, one on each side of the opening so that when the opening is located in a respiratory passage and opposite a passage leading to a lobe of a lung and the collars are inflated fluid passing into the lobe is prevented from reaching other parts of the lung. The collar 12 on the proximal side of the opening is inflatable at lower pressure than the other collar 14 and thus is inflated first and may be inflated alone, if desired. The collars 12, 14 are secured by retaining rings 34, 36, 44, 46 over sleeves 32, 42 which are disposed around the end of the main conduit 20 and an end plug 26 respectively. The main conduit and the plug are interconnected by a tube 30 which passes through the sleeves 32, 42 and conducts inflating gas or liquid from a tube 28 arranged alongside the main conduit to the interior of the collars. The proximal end 26b of the plug is curved to deflect fluid passing through the main conduit transversely to emerge from the catheter between the two collars.
