Abstract

1,173,396. Digital electric calculators. SIE MENS A.G. 11 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 1744/68. Heading G4A. A circuit arrangement for use with a model scanning apparatus for calculating co-ordinates of datum points of a curve defined by a model scanned by the scanning apparatus comprises input means receiving from a scanning apparatus signals which are measures of the co-ordinate values of a curve of a scanned model, means storing the calculated co-ordinate values of datum points, computer means extrapolating a curve of predetermined function from the most recently calculated datum point, means forming the difference between the input values and the extrapolated values, means sensing when the difference between the input and extrapolated values has reached a predetermined level, and means responsive to the sensing means to cause the then existing input co-ordinate values to be introduced into the storage means as a new datum point. A tracer following a model feeds data indicating, for instance, the Y, Z co-ordinates 11, 12 to stores 13, 14 of a calculator. This can represent datum point P 1 (Y 1 , Z 1 ) the value of which is also stored in registers 15, 16. As the tracer progresses the values of Y and Z alter and the differences Y-Y 1 , Z-Z 1 appear at the output of difference register 17, 18. The computer sections 19, 20 extrapolate in dependence on the difference between the last two datum points (Y 1 -Y 0 , Z 1 -Z 0 ) along a straight line to produce a value Y f , Zf in synchronism with the reading of the corresponding location on the model. The value Y-Yf appears at the output of the difference forming circuit 23, 24. When the difference reaches a predetermined value the existing Z and Y values are fed into stores 26, 27 as new datum points, Y 2 , Z 2 the new values Y 2 -Y 1 , Z 2 -Z 1 , for extrapolators 19, 20 are obtained from the difference registers 17, 18 and the stores 15, 16 are erased and the new values inserted. The procedure can obtain datum points used in punched tape for programmed machine control. Three interpolator sections can be used for three-dimensional scanning. As shown scanning is performed for a predetermined X value.
