Abstract

1,172,576. Clamps, boring earth &c. G. M. HAW. 3 July, 1967 [7 March, 1967], No. 30492/67. Headings E1F and E2B. A pipe clamping and supporting device comprises a frame 2 carrying a V-shaped jaw 3 aslidable jaw 9 oppositely disposed thereto said slidable jaw being less in height in the axial direction of the pipes being clamped than that of the other jaw and having a serrated contacting surface, a lever 16 pivoted in the frame to cause a movement of the slidable jaw and an adjustable toggle linkage 20 for clamping the V-pipe between the V-shaped jaw and the slidable jaw. The device is described for holding a borehole pipe and as shown one end portion of the frame 2 is pivoted to the end portion of a sub frame I which in use is placed over a borehole on a casing or block. The jaw 3 is adjustable and is secured between parallel members 4 of the frame 2 by means of bolts 5 passing through a chosen pair of a series of holes 6 in the members 4. The jaw 3 is also provided with a T shaped stabilising member 7 which with the aid of supports 8 is pivotally connected to the end portion of the frame 1. The serrated jaw is mounted to slide in generally horizontal guides 10 secured to the frame 2, the jaw 9 being spring loaded by means of springs 11 away from the jaw 3, the springs extending between the jaw 9 and a member of the frame 2. To the other side of the serrated jaw is attached a metal block 13 with an upwardly extending cam-like surface 14 and the lever 16 has a curved cam-like surface 15 the lever being pivotally connected between two extensions 17 of the frame 2 so as to be rotatable about a horizontal pivot. The end portion of the lever 16 remote from the block 13 has short shafts 18 connecting at right angles thereto the shafts being supported by parallel members 19 of the sub-frame at 1. The toggle locking linkage 20 operates' between a vertical metal plate 21 connected to the serrated jaw 9 and a screw adjustment stop 22 mounted on extensions 17 of the frame 2, the locking linkage being operable by means of a hand lever 23. In use the device is placed over the bore hole with the adjustable jaw 3 removed from the frame 2, a borehole pipe is then placed in position and the jaw 3 is then secured in a suitable position: part of the weight of the frame 2 and the parts carried thereby is supported by the shafts 18 of the frame 1 and this tends to rotate the lever 16 which in turn through the block 13 pushes the serrated jaw 9 against the pipe and once this position has been reached part of the weight of the pipe acts to create a gripping action between the two jaws onto the pipe. When the pipe is lifted the weight which acts through the shafts 18 is decreased and the pipe can pass upwardly through the clamp. If it is desired at any stage to positively clamp the pipe in position this can be accomplished by depressing the lever 23 which brings the toggle action locking linkage into use.
