Abstract

[Also in Division H2] An electrical power outlet comprises socket contacts each having a plurality of resilient fingers 26, 28, 30 or 31, 33, 35 extending from a common base and aligned so as to be capable of mating with a plug blade in two mutually perpendicular positions defined by slots 32, 34, the contacts being formed from a copper-beryllium alloy which is subsequently heat treated to spring hardness. Fig. 1 depicts a duplicated outlet arrangement comprising contact assemblies 10, 12, each having a pair of socket contacts and an integral joining strip, located in cavities 14, 16 in an insulating housing 18 adapted to be closed by a cover (not shown) provided with openings for the entry of plug blades. Each contact assembly is punched from a Cu-Be alloy having a Be content of 1À60- 1À85%, preferably at least 1À7%, and is subsequently heated in a reducing atmosphere for 4 hours at 605-625‹ F., preferably 615‹ F. Each contact finger may be provided with an axial rib, or the base of each contact may be outwardly dimpled to provide a fulcrum point bearing against the housing cavity wall. In modifications, the strip joining a pair of contacts may be separate, made, e.g., of brass, and connected to the contacts by bolts or rivets; the base of each contact may form a closed four-walled box; and the stiffness of one of the contact fingers may be increased by a cooperating finger formed on the joining strip. Alternatively, contact fingers may be stiffened by angling or edge ribbing.
