[Also in Division G1] The temperature of the rotor 1, Fig. 1, of a rotary electrical machine, is measured by a temperature sensor such as a temperature dependent resistor 6 or 7, mounted on the stator 3 adjacent the air gap 4 to receive radiant heat from the rotor and connected to a monitoring circuit and switch. The resistor or resistors may be mounted in the iron of the stator, or in the winding slots, and may have roughened and darkened surfaces to increase the sensitive area and to improve the absorption of radiated heat from the rotor. The monitoring circuit and switch to which the sensors are connected includes an arrangement for deenergizing the machine when a predetermined temperature is exceeded. The temperature sensitive resistors may be made of indium-antimonide, lead-selenide or a semi-conductor material.
