Heating by electricity. -Heating elements consisting of wire or strip of resistance metal or alloy mounted mainly on one side of refractory sheet insulating material such as mica, are packed tightly between ribs or flanges on or in slots in the metal body to be heated by the insertion of bands or strips of highly expansive metal or alloy, such as brass, so as to maintain thermal contact when hot. As shown in Fig. 1, a single heating element d is mounted between curved, straight, or interrupted ribs b, c on the back of a hot-plate a. and is pressed tightly against the face of the rib c by forcing in the metal packing-strip e, which is separated from it by insulating material f and metal g. The faces of the ribs may be parallel or inclined. As shown in Fig. 2, two heating-elements d, d' are pressed, one against each rib, by forcing a pair of wedgeshaped packing-strips e, e<1>. Kettles, saucepans, and other vessels may be formed with ribs for heating in a similar manner. Metal blocks or slabs, such as flat irons, may be formed with a number of parallel slots, for the reception of the heating elements and metal packing as shown in Fig. 4.
