Abstract

1,170,744. Moulding shoes. CLARKS Ltd. 5 Jan., 1967 [5 Oct., 1965], No. 42312/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] An outsole formed of elastomeric material has a reinforcement layer 1 embedded in the sole adjacent the wearing surface of the sole. The reinforcement layer 1 may be a natural or synthetic fabric, e.g. a woven mesh or a thin sheet or foil of metal, inorganic fibres or plastics material and may be perforated. The reinforcement may be embedded in the sole during the moulding of a separate sole or during the combined moulding and bonding of a sole to a shoe upper (Fig. 1). The mould has a base 4, a side mould 9 with a sealing lip 10 and pins 3 which hold the reinforcement layer 1 in position. The pins 3 (Fig. 4) have rounded heads 5 and an annular groove 6 which engages the edge of perforations in the layer 1. The elastomeric material of the sole preferably has a low viscosity at the time of moulding so that the layer 1 is not displaced during moulding, suitable materials being polyurethanes, plastisols such as those based on polyvinyl chloride and liquid plasticizer, fluid polysulphide rubbers and fluid silicone rubbers. The sole material may be solid or expanded and may contain fillers.
