Abstract

1,170,338. Vehicle steering gear. H. H. MILLER. 14 March, 1967 [4 April, 1966], No. 12029/67. Heading B7H. To provide for automatic adjustment of the toe-in of vehicle wheels under operating conditions, a tie bar in the steering linkage is provided with a damped lost motion connected. The steering linkage comprises a pitman arm 3, idler arm 4, " relay " rod 6 and tie rods 7 and 8. The lost motion connection which may be incorporated anywhere in the linkage except that it is not fitted between the pitman arm and the left-hand steered wheel on a left-hand drive vehicle, and vice versa on right-hand drive vehicle, comprises a piston 13 operating in a cylinder 11 within a reservoir 12, there being damping orifices 15 for the passage of fluid. A spacer 14 for varying the extent of lost motion may be included.
