Abstract
1,170,335. Flexible hoses. DAYCO CORP. 22 Feb., 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 8511/67. Heading F2P. A smooth inner and outer-walled flexible hose comprises an inner elastomeric layer 11, a knitted fabric layer 12 surmounting the inner layer, a second elastomeric layer 14 surmounting the fabric layer, a reinforcing wire member 17 of helical spaced coils completely embedded in said second layer, and an outer layer 18 of elastomeric material. An elastomeric sheet 18 is preferably wrapped about the second layer with overlapped edges to form the outer layer and a further fabric tape wrapping, Fig. 5 (not shown), is applied. The elastomeric material of said layers may be natural or synthetic rubber and the knitted fabric tube may be formed from cotton, rayon, nylon or polyester threads. The inner layer is extruded and passed firstly through a conventional knitting machine (not shown) to form the knitted fabric tube and then through a side-head extruder 13, Fig. 1 (not shown), to form the second layer. A desired length is cut off the formed body and blown on to a mandrel (15), Fig. 2 (not shown). A wire 16 is next fed through a spring-coiling mechanism (not shown) so that the coils formed cut into the surface of the outer layer. A rectangular sheet 18 of rubber is wrapped about the outer layer with overlapped edges, Fig. 3 (not shown). The assembly is completed by a fabric tape wrapping and vulcanized in an oven (20), Fig. 5 (not shown), to form a unitary hose assembly.
