Abstract

1,170,312. Eddy current brakes. SIEMENS A.G. 21 March, 1967 [23 March, 1966], No. 13326/67. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F2] A combined eddy current and friction railway track brake consists of a magnetic yoke 10, 11, 13 which surrounds a running rail 12 for a vehicle wheel 17 and which carries ferromagnetic brake rails 14, 15 for movement transversely to engage the wheel 17, a flux being generated in the magnetic circuit formed by the yoke, brake rails and wheel by passing a current through a number of insulated conductors 16 arranged on both sides of the rail 12 and preferably in equal numbers, the conductors being arranged in series with a power source such that the current flows in the same direction in all the conductors. The electrical connections for this purpose are as shown in Fig. 3, which is simplified to show only two conductors in assocation with each of the two running rails, the parallel circuit comprising resistor 21 and rectifier 22 being to prevent excessive voltage surge, in conjunction with centre tap earth 23.
