Abstract

1,169,920. Planetary change-speed gearing. TATRA NARODNI PODNIK. 20 Jan., 1967 [21 Jan., 1966], No. 3146/67. Heading F2D. In a change-speed gear having two planetary trains in series to give four forward and two reverse ratios, the first train planet carrier 4 is rigid with the second stage sun pinion 13 and may be connected by a friction clutch 30 to the second train planet carrier 17 which is rigid with an output shaft 27. In a motor vehicle, a gear input shaft 1 is connectible to an engine crank-shaft 25 by a friction main clutch 23. The first train comprises planets 5 meshing a reaction sun 6, a reaction annulus gear 7, and stepped planets 3 which in turn mesh an input sun pinion on the shaft 1. A brake 28 holds the sun 6 for first train reduced drive, a clutch 10 couples the sun 6 and the carrier 4 for first train direct drive, and a brake 26 holds the annulus 7 for reverse. The second train comprises a sun 13, planets 14, and an annulus gear 15. A brake 29 holds the annulus 15 for second train reduced drive, and the clutch 30 couples the sun 13 and planet carriers 4, 17 together for second train direct drive. The four forward ratios are obtained using the following first and second train ratio combinations: reduced-reduced, direct-reduced, reduced-direct and direct-direct. The reverse ratios are obtained using reverse-reduced and reverse-direct. All clutches and brakes are friction disc types, and all are disengaged for Neutral. As shown, with the main clutch 23 and the gear-box on opposite sides of a driven axle (not shown) the input and output shafts 1, 27 extend coaxially from the same end of the gear-box, the shaft 27 driving a final drive bevel 22 via pinions 19, 20. Alternatively the shafts 1, 27 may extend from opposite ends of the box (Fig. 2, not shown).
