Abstract

1,169,532. Leather-drying machines. E. W. HUDSON Ltd. 20 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 44649/65. Heading F4G. [Also in Division C6] A machine for drying leather, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises an assembly 1 of stacked platen structures 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 provided with metal, e.g. steel, particularly mild steel, substantially horizontal drying plates 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, on whose upper surfaces sheets of wet leather are placed, e.g. slicked. Each drying plate rests on and covers the open top of a substantially rectangular, rigid frame 15, in which a substantially horizontal metal sheet 17 is bolted to form a chamber 16a, into which a heated fluid, such as steam, is fed, through a pipe 29, to heat the associated drying plate and thus dry the leather thereon. The heating fluid leaves each chamber 16a through a pipe 31. The lowermost platen structure 4 comprises only a drying plate 10 a frame 15 having a metal sheet 17 forming a heating chamber 16a. The drying plate of the uppermost platen structure 8 may be covered by a suction hood 9 comprising a frame 15. The hood 9 and each of the platen structures 5, 6, 7, 8 are provided with a substantially horizontal wall or partition comprising an upper rubber sheet 18 and a threeply lower sheet of gauze 20, which divides each of the platens structures 5, 6, 7, 8 into a middle compartment 16b and a lower, open-bottomed compartment 16c constituting a suction hood for the drying plate of a platen structure located immediately thereunder. Air and watervapour are exhausted from the suction hoods through pipes 30. Each drying plate may also rest on the bars (24), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a grille comprising cross-tubes 23 supported on the associated metal sheet 17. The bars (24) are pierced by holes 25. A smaller drying machine according to the invention has only a platen structure 4 and a hood 9 in its assembly or stack 1. The drying machine is associated with the skin-handling and transfer arrangements 2, as described in Specification 1,169,534 and the heating arrangements and control gear 3, as described in Specification 1,169,533.
