Abstract

1,169,387. X-ray diffraction analysis of cement clinker. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. April 10, 1967 [April 11, 1966], No. 16253/67. Heading G1A. Cement clinker is analyzed by an external standard X-ray diffraction method and the percentages P of the major components is determined from the equation P = mH + b where H is the height of a diffraction line characteristic of the phase. For (CaO) 3 SiO 2 , the diffraction angle, 2# is 30À1 degrees, m = 2À85 and b = -15À5. For (CaO) 2 SiO 2 , 2# =31À1 degrees, m = 4À0 and b = -16À0. For (CaO) 3 Al 2 O 3 , 2# = 33À2 degrees, m = 0À1167 and b = -1À17. For (CaO) 4 Al 2 O 3 Fe 2 O 3 , 2# = 33À8 degrees, m = 0À4225 and b = -3À85. The clinker is ground to 200 mesh and mounted alongside a silicon standard powder in the sample holder of a conventional X-ray diffractometer. The diffractometer is scanned through diffraction angles 35 degrees - 29 degrees to measure the characteristic lines and then scanned on to 27 degrees to measure the 28À1 degrees line of the external standard. If the intensity of the standard line differs from a preset value, the values of the measured lines is adjusted accordingly. The results of the analysis may be used to control the operation of the kiln producing the clinker.
