Abstract
1,169,256. Making closure caps; stamping; spinning. A. L. MEROLLE. 18 Sept., 1967 [12 Oct., 1966], No. 42428/67. Headings B3A, B3J and B3Q. [Also in Divisions B4 and B8] A method of making a lug-type closure cap 20, Fig. 9, from a metal shell 22 having a circular top with a cylindrical skirt comprises partially incurling the skirt to form a flange 26, Fig. 13, thereafter with a first means transforming spaced portions of the flange into partially formed lugs (28), Fig. 14 (not shown), and additionally curling portions of the flange (27) between the lugs, and with a second means shaping the lugs and curled portions into their final forms. Apparatus for performing the method has five tool-heads 62, (64), 66, (68) 70 carried by a spider 37 which is lowered by an eccentric-and-crank mechanism 42, Fig. 3, for engaging the heads with the shells 22. The heads perform the following operations on shells which are moved in succession beneath the heads. Head 62, Fig. 4, shears a liner from a web and inserts it in a shell; heads (64), 66, Figs. 5 (not shown), and Fig. 6, in two operations partially incurl the skirt; head (68), Fig. 7 (not shown), forms the partially-formed lugs (28, Fig. 14) and performs the additional curling operation, while head 70, Fig. 8, completes the lug formation and the curling operation. Blanks &c.-transferring.-A belt advances the shells against an abutment (202), Fig. 2 (not shown), where they are engaged by a pusher 61 and moved into pockets 56, Fig. 3, in an annular table in which they are seated by a vertical pusher. There are twelve pockets 56, and the table is indexed in steps of 30 degrees, by a modified worm (48), Fig. 2A (not shown), engaging rollers 49 on the table-shaft 51. The tool-heads are so spaced that although they descend after each indexing operation of the table, each shell occupies a non-working position following each working station. Finished caps are raised by an incline engaging a movable base 58a in each pocket and are returned to the belt by a curved abutment 207, Fig. 1. Shearing and feeding paper.-A web of lining paper 85, Fig. 4, fed through a slot 84 is sheared between a stationary knife 89 and a knife 88 carried by the movable spider 37 and the severed liner falls until retained by a lip 82a. An ejector 90 pushes the severed liner 31 into the shell 22 and is operated, against a return spring 92, by a rod 97 which is depressed by a lever 94 on the spider, the spider moving the lever against a stationary abutment 105. The web is fed intermittently by mechanism (86), Fig. 2 (not shown), driven by an eccentric. Spinning.-The head (64) has one or more rollers (111), Fig. 5 (not shown), in a housing (101) rotatable for spinning over the edge (25) of the skirt. A hold-down (114) biased by a spring (118) clamps the shell during spinning. Incurling of the edge 25 is carried further by dies 131, 132, Fig. 6, on the tool-head 66, the die 131 also clamping the shell. The tool-head (68, Fig. 7) for the next stage is similar to that of Fig. 6, and that for completing the cap has pivoted fingers 175, Fig. 8, operated by a collar 174, and a spring-pressed ejector 167. A lower die 161 on the head clamps the shell as continued downward movement of the collar 174 with the upper die 162 cams the fingers outwardly to support the lugs during completion of the cap between the dies 161, 162. The apparatus may be modified to give the table 55 indexing steps of 60 degrees.
