Abstract
1,168,786. Microscopes. W. WATSON & SONS Ltd. Jan. 6, 1967 [Oct. 7, 1965], No. 42539/65. Heading G2J. A coarse and fine movement control device for effecting controlled movement of a member such as a microscope stage 39, Fig. 3, comprises a rack and pinion mechanism 42, 56, connected between the member 39 and an intermediate member 24 and forming the coarse adjustment, and at least one deformable resilient connection 22 between the intermediate member 24 and a fixed support 21, the control means which deforms the resilient connection 22 providing the fine adjustment. As shown, a pair of coarse control knobs 13, Fig. 4, are rigid with a hollow shaft 50 carrying the pinion 56, the rack 42 is carried by a vertical portion 38 of the stage support and the intermediate member 24 and portion 38 from interengaging dovetail slides. The intermediate member 24 is connected by a pair of cantilever springs 22, 23, stiffened by plates 27, to the fixed support 21. On rotating knobs 14, secured to a shaft 67 passing through the coarse adjustment shaft 50, a screw threaded portion 73 causes a nut 74 to slide within limits controlled by a stop pin 79 and end stops 80, 81, the nut 74 having arms 75 engaging slots 76 in shaft 50 to ensure sliding motion and also engaging a ring 83 slidably mounted on shaft 50 and contacting the two limbs of a bifurcated arm 32b of a bell-crank lever 32. The consequent rocking of lever 32 about its pivot 33 presses its ball 31 against a stud 34 on the fixed support 21 and thus causes flexing of the springs 22, 23, to provide the fine control.
