Abstract

1,168,712. Analogue-to-digital converters. BÍLKOW G.m.b.H. 19 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 18049/67. Heading G4H. [Also in Division H3] An analogue-to-digital converter comprises a first sample and hold unit to store the voltage to be measured, and a second sample and hold unit to store the voltage after comparison with a reference voltage, the second unit having means for subtracting the reference voltge from the input voltage, and means for multiplying by a factor the resulting voltage, the output of the second sample and hold unit being connected to the store of the first, through an amplifier and a switch. A control device controls a number of switches in the converter to cause the signal to circulate through the second unit several times to obtain the required number of digital bits. The first sample and hold unit comprises amplifier 1<SP>1</SP>, electronic switch 2<SP>1</SP>, storage capacitor 3 and output amplifier 4<SP>1</SP> with a very high input impedance. The switch 2<SP>1</SP> comprises a pair of transistors each having a series diode connected to the output of amplifier 1. The transistors are caused to conduct briefly by a pulse applied through a transformer, charging the capacitor 3 to the value of the output of amplifier 1. Amplifier 4 applies this signal to point 5 where it is compared (at 6) with the reference voltage U N and, if greater a " 1 " appears at the output 23 and switch 15 closes to apply the reference voltage to the feed-back loop of the second sample and hold unit 7, 8, 9, 10. The reference voltage is thereby subtracted from the voltage U A at point 5. Resistors 12, 13 also cause the difference to be multiplied by 2 and switch 7 closes briefly to store it. on capacitor 9. This signal U B at point 11 is passed via amplifier 16 and switch 17 (closed by control unit 24) to be stored on capacitor 3 to form a new signal U A . The process repeats under the control of unit 24 to obtain the desired number of digits. In a modification the difference signal is doubled for the first three steps and for the fourth step it is multiplied by 1À25. This is repeated, each group of four digits then representing a binary coded decimal number. The range of the converter can be adjusted by adjusting the reference voltage U N or the amplification factor of the first sample and hold unit.
