Abstract

1,168,406. Symmetrical azo compounds. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 5 April, 1968, No. 16592/68. Heading C20. Symmetrical azo compounds of the formula are obtained by reacting an amino compound of the formula with a source of positively charged halogen in the presence of a solvent which contains 0 to 55% by wt. of water and 45 to 100% by wt. of water-miscible organic liquid having a b.pt. between 0‹ and 350‹ C., at a temperature above the freezing point of the reactants and below 100‹ 0. and separating the reaction product from said solution, wherein R 1 is a C 1 -C 6 alkyl radical which may be substituted; R 2 is a C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl radical which may be substituted, with the limitation that R 1 and R 2 together contain at least 4 carbon atoms, or R 1 and R 2 together are a C 4 -C 12 alkylene group which may be substituted; and R 3 is a CN, COOR or COOM radical, where R is a C 1 -C 6 alkyl radical which may be substituted and M is Na or K. Specificed sources of positively charged halogen are hypochlorites or hypochlorites formed in situ from Cl 2 and an acid acceptor. Examples are given for the production of compounds. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,102,532.
