Abstract

1,167,906. Turbines. J.W. HILL. Oct. 18, 1967 [Oct.21, 1966], No.47388/66. Heading F1T. In a turbine or like machine a pressure balancing connection H between stages has a throttling valve G which controls the flow of working fluid through the connection automatically in response to differential axial expansion between the rotor and stator as sensed by a device J. Valve G is closed during transient operating conditions of the machine so that the clearance between the stator blades B and the downstream rotor blades C is a maximum within the limit permitted by thrust bearing A. Valve G opens under the action of sensor J when steady operating conditions are reached so that the rotor moves to the left into a position of minimum clearance between the respective stator and rotor blades. A further connection L maintains a flow of working fluid through connection H for cooling purposes when valve G is closed.
