Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A combined mixing and extrusion moulding machine comprises a pair of co-rotating and intermeshing screws in a housing 1, which are fed via openings 3a, and a pair of contrarotating and intermeshing screws in a housing 2 fed at either end with material from housing I via channels 8 and communicating centrally with an extrusion orifice. The screws in housing 1 are driven at opposite ends via gear trains 13, 14 and shear pin couplings, but by the same motor 11, and the non-driven ends are supported, one in a radial bearing and the other in a radial and axial bearing, these bearings being mounted on the gear boxes as shown. The screw whose non-driven end is mounted in the radial and axial bearing may be axially displaced. Channels 8 lead from a kneading zone 4 and flow therefrom may be adjusted by means of a throttle 7. Generally the screws in housing 1 are rotated more rapidly and are of smaller diameter than those in housing 2. It is stated that, e.g. in the extrusion of polymerisation melts only the screws in housing 2 may be used. A pressure gauge 9 is provided, by reference to which, the rate of flow of material in housing 1 may be controlled.
