This machine is the same as that described in the parent Specification 1,167,362, but the claims are directed to a method of data processing by printing on a copy sheet e.g. a record card, 13, Fig. 3, from a master sheet 5 and also providing machine readable data e.g. punched holes P by means of a punching device 17, comprises producing a typed copy and machine readable original 1 which is sensed by reading devices 9 which controls, via a store 18 and a decoder 151, the data punched, attaching the master sheet 1 on to a duplicating machine 12, 15, and printing parts of the master sheet on the same card 13. Typewriters.-A typewriter 150 for producing the original 1 and the master sheet 5 has typelevers 3, Fig. 2, and between them and the platen and between the original 1 and master sheet 5 is a carbon sheet 4. A minor script is produced on the back of sheet 5 by a dye sheet 6. The characters may be of known CMC 7 script readable by magnetic heads or two machines coupled together may be used, one typing in ordinary characters and the other magnetic data. Duplicating machine.-The process employs known rotary duplicating machines in which the master sheet 5, Fig. 4, is attached to a printing cylinder 12 and a counter pressure roller 15 is selectively operated from a keyboard so that one, two or more lines are printed on to the copy sheet 13. The mechanism rotating the printing cylinder 12 also feeds the copy sheets 13 and also drives the sensing heads 9, 9a, 9b, in a reader unit which senses the machine readable data on the original sheet 1, which is, as shown, mounted on a flat plate 7. For accurately aligning the lines to be read, illuminated slots 10 are provided over which the original sheet 1 is clamped. A second readable sheet 1a may also be provided to control printing by a separate mechanism on the cylinder immediately in front of the printing master sheet 5. In a further embodiment (Fig. 15) the original sheets 1, 1a are clamped on a cylinder (153) arranged adjacent to and driven in synchronism with the printing cylinder. In each of these embodiments the sensing heads are moved in letter-spacing direction by a helical groove and follower and stepped for line-spacing by racks and pawls. The sensing devices may be magnetic or optical readers. Selectable data on printing cylinder.-The printing cylinder 12 may have selectable matter controlled by magnetic sensing of marks on the original sheet 1a.
