[Also in Divisions C1 and E1] Refuse disposal apparatus comprises a wheeled vehicle 10 having means 45 at one side to form a continuous trench as the vehicle moves along the ground, a horizontal chamber 19 extending longitudinally and accessible at the opposite side for the introduction of refuse, a ram 33 moving in the chamber to compact the refuse towards a second chamber 23 forming an extension of the first chamber, a second ram 28 movable in a vertical plane in the chamber 23 to shear off a compacted part of the refuse and further compact the sheared portion into a third chamber 31 below the end of chamber 23, a third ram 35 movable in the third chamber transversely of the vehicle to further compact successive charges of compacted refuse towards a fourth chamber 34 wherein a fourth ram gives further compaction and discharges the refuse into a trench. Operation of the rams maintains continuous pressure during all compactions. In operation, earth removed from the trench by peripheral diggers on the wheel 45 falls to a conveyer 51, thence to conveyer 52 and is deflected by a block 57 to fall on the trench and cover the refuse deposited from chamber 34. Tamping bars 61 compact the trench. In a modification, the discharge end of the chamber 34 is curved whereby the compacted refuse is deposited horizontal to the trench. Pressure responsive means can be included so that when the pressure in cylinder 41 is below a fixed minimum, forward motion of the vehicle is prevented, thus assuring sufficient compacting pressure in the chamber 34.
