Abstract

1,167,116. Monocarboxylic acids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 13 May, 1968, No. 22543/68. Heading C2C. Monocarboxylic acids are prepared by contacting branched chain mono-olefines with 4 to 10 C atoms in their molecule with carbon monoxide and an excess of water in the presence of liquid hydrogen fluoride while intimately mixing the said components. The mono-olefines are diluted with one or more inert diluents which are liquid saturated hydrocarbons. Examples of the starting materials are isobutylene, 2-methylbutene-1 and mono-olefines having up to 16 C atoms which decompose under the reaction conditions to olefins with 4-10 C atoms, e.g. tetraisobutylene.
