Abstract

1,166,867. Supply systems for charging batteries. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 17 March, 1967 [25 March, 1966], No. 13262/66. Heading H2H. The battery 15 of a vehicle is charged by the circuit shown, in which terminals 11, 12 are connected to the vehicle dynamo or alternator/ rectifier unit, the windings 16, 18 are magnetically coupled and the switch 17 is continually opened and closed by the vehicle, for example by sensing the voltage at terminals 11, 12 and varying the mark/space ratio of the switch 17 in accordance therewith. When switch 17 is closed the battery is charged through the winding 16 and when it is open the energy stored in the winding 16 is transferred to the winding 18 which charges the battery through the diode 19. Switch 17 may be mechanical or electrical in nature, e.g. a transistor in the latter case. Members 16, 18 may be replaced by a single tapped winding, Fig. 2 (not shown).
