In a writing machine, a marker 3 provided with an exchangeable stylus 6, is suspended in ball-joint fashion in a bearing 2, and is capable of axial movement against the force of a compression spring 7. The end adjacent the stylus 6 is received in the aperture of a ring 41, which ring is moved in the and y co-ordinate directions according to the profiles of a series of cams 19, 21 carried by a rotatable drum 18. In operation, an electric motor 61 drives, in step-wise fashion via a Maltese cross 50 (Fig. 3) and a gear-wheel 46, a disc 16 to which is attached the drum 18. In this manner a certain series of cams is selected. Thereupon a motor 44 rotates a cam follower 12 about the axis X-X, so that a wheel 14 rolls on a cam surface 15 of a ring 4 mounted on the disc 16. The drum 18 is therefore lowered, so that the ring 41 is moved into its starting position by two levers 29 and (30, Fig. 2) following the profiles of the selected cams 19 and 21. At the same time a bell-crank lever 26 is pivoted about 25 in conformity with the cam 20, so that the marker 3 is moved axially downwards, to bring the stylus 6 into contact with the drawing surface. As the drum 18 moves upwards under the action of a compression spring 22, the stylus describes a curve corresponding to the profiles of the selected cams, before the marker 3 is returned to its starting position by lever 26. Energizing an electromagnet 74 causes an armature 73 to rotate the lever 26, so that the marker 3 is lowered to the drawing surface for point marking.
