Abstract

1,165,902. Stamping. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 4 Aug., 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 19700/66. Heading B3Q. [Also in Divisions B5 and H1] An article is formed by forcing a metal or plastics preform into a mould by the use of hydrostatic pressure supplemented by shock wave pressure caused by an electrical discharge in the hydraulic medium. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, a tubular preform 30 is attached at both ends to caps 38a and 38b and located within a vented tubular die 34, itself located within a fixed holder 32 and an hydraulically movable holder 34. Also located within the die is a pair of relatively adjustable electrodes 68a, 68b. In operation, fluid at a pressure sufficient to subject the tube to a force just below its yield point is introduced into the die through passage 44, after which a spark is produced between the electrodes. In a second embodiment, not shown, a sheet is clamped over a die and forced into the die by the discharge of an electrode assembly centrally located in a chamber in which the die is located.
