1,164,760. Beverage-brewing machine. A. M. KING. 22 April, 1968, No. 18977/68. Heading A4D. A beverage-brewing apparatus comprises a chamber for receiving a mixture of hot water and ground beverage material, the floor of the chamber being permeable to fluids but not solids, means for forcing air into the chamber through the floor to agitate the brew; and means for withdrawing the beverage through the floor; such method of brewing a beverage is also claimed. In a brewing operation, which may be initiated by a coin-release mechanism, hot water and beverage material are added to the chamber C1, which is formed by the juxtaposition of a cylindrical member 21 and the permeable floor F. The floor comprises a grid 38 which supports a movable filter strip 39 carried by a guide rod 69 and a drum 64, and clamped against a seal 37 by the member 21. A piston P sliding vertically in a second chamber C2 is then raised by a motor operating through a crank and a horizontal drive-shaft 19 with the effect that air is forced through the brew. As the piston returns, the beverage is sucked through the filter to be dispensed through the outlet 51. As the beverage is discharged, the member 21 is raised through the action of a cam 54 on the shaft 19, thus releasing the filter, which is pulled along by rotation of the drum 64 to carry away the spent grounds.
