Abstract

116,418. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Dunham, H. V.). Sept. 4, 1917, Mineral oils, purifying.-In a process of refining lubricating oils to produce paraffinum liquidum, the oils, after treatment with acid and the removal of the sludge, are mixed with ammonia and alcohol, and the mass is allowed to settle. In one example of the process, sulphuric acid is added, in successive instalments of increasing strength, to an approximately equal weight of oil, the sludge being removed after each treatment. A solution containing one volume of strong ammonia water to two volumes of strong alcohol is then added, and the resulting product, after settling, is dried by passing a current of hot air through it or otherwise, and is filtered through a column of fuller's earth.
