Abstract

1,164,172. Percussive tools. L. A. GRANT. 2 Jan., 1967 [3 Jan., 1966; 22 Sept., 1966], No. 183/67. Heading B4C. [Also in Divisions E1 and F4] An apparatus for supporting a demolition tool such as a percussive tool 32, e.g., a drill, chisel, hammer or a scoop, backhoe or bracket comprises a carriage 18 having a rotatably mounted extensible boom assembly 22 for carrying the pivotally mounted tool. The carriage 18 is provided with wheels 82 arranged to run on rails 12, 14 positioned above a pit 16, e.g., a soaking pit used in a steel making process, the tool being used to remove hard debris accumulated on the sides and bottom of the pit: the wheels are mounted on shafts 20 axially adjustable in bearings 72, 74. The boom 22 is pivoted on a bracket 162 secured to a turntable 24 which is rotatable in bearing 98, Fig. 3, and driven by a motor 124, via gears 118, 122. The boom consists of an inner member 28 telescoped within an outer member 22, relative movement between the two being effected by means of a ram 212, Fig. 5; two further rams 178, 200 are provided for controlling the position of the member 22 and tool 32. A seat 34 is provided for an operator. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the boom is secured to a turntable 270 rotatable, via a chain-and-sprocket drive (288, 296, Fig. 11), on a structure formed by two beams 220, 222 releasably connected to beams 224 by means of clamps 234, 236. The beams 224 are adjustably mounted on I-section rails 237, the beams being clamped to the upper flanges of the rails by means of clamps 236; the clamps may be actuated by means of a screw or by a ram. An operator's cab 312 is mounted for transverse movement on the structure. In a further modification the supporting structure for the turntable platform (422, Fig. 14) comprises a pair of hollow members (426, 428) into which are telescoped members (432, 434) connected at the outer ends by beams (430). The members (432, 434) may be adjusted within the outer members (426, 438) by means of rams (436) in order to suit different sizes of pit. The structure is clamped to the upper flanges of the rails by ram-actuated clamps.
