Abstract
1,163,733. Washing casks, etc.; endless conveyers. JOSEPH SANKEY & SONS Ltd., and C. G. GOLDING. 4 Oct., 1966 [5 Oct., 1965], No. 42153/65. Headings B8A and B8T. A metal cask, &c. 12, Fig. 3, having two concentric inlet, &c. valves, is placed upside down on a conveyer (15), Fig. 11 (not shown), which advances it beneath a cross-plate (19) so that it actuates a control 21, Fig. 3, between the chains of the conveyer, the control halting the cask, &c. and causing an hydraulic servo 41, Fig. 5, to be energized, thus raising a washing head 14 into abutment with the valves on the cask, which is itself carried upwards against the cross-plate, so that cold water, compressed air, hot detergent, hot rinsing water and compressed air can then be passed through the cask to wash it. The washing head 14 comprises an inner supply passage 47, 59, Fig. 5, for engagement with the inner of the two valves on the cask, surrounded by an outer drain passage 66, the two being formed in a twoplate structure having rods 44, 45 slidable up and down through holes in a fixed frame 43 when the hydraulic servo 41 is energized, &c. A supply system connected to the washing head 14 has pneumatically actuated valves 85-88, Fig. 6, controlling respectively an inlet 81 for sterilized compressed air, an inlet 82 for cold water, an inlet 83 for hot water and an inlet 84 for hot detergent. The hot detergent is supplied from two heated tanks 78, 79 whose level is balanced by a connecting pipe 89, the tank 78 having an expansion tank 90. The detergent from the two tanks 78, 79 passes through a filter 100 and a pump 97 to the inlet 84. The compressed air and liquids are fed through a pipe 72 to the inner washing supply passage and thence to the cask, &c. 12; the outer passage feeds into a pipe 74 leading to a two-way valve 75. In one position, the valve 75 connects the pipe 74 to a drain 76, to which compressed air, and the cold and hot rinses, are passed. When detergent is passed through the pipe 74, the valve 75 is turned to its other position, connecting to a pipe 77 and the tank 78, so that the used detergent is recirculated. The sequence of operations triggered-off by actuation of the control 21 is effected by an automatic electric, &c. control system including clocks which time each separate washing, &c. function. When the final charge of compressed air has been passed through the cask 12, the servo 41 lowers the washing head 14 so that the cask, &c. is replaced on the conveyer 15. The control 21 is lowered by a pneumatic servo, and the conveyer 15 moves the cask 12 out of the machine; as it passes a trigger 22, a stop 23 is withdrawn from the path of the next cask, &c., which is advanced by the conveyer to the control 21, already returned to its operative position. The washing sequence is then once more performed.
